How to convert a PDF for Apple Books

Apple Books shows PDFs as fixed pages, so on an iPhone you're always zooming and scrolling. Convert the PDF to EPUB here and Apple Books treats it like a real ebook: text that fits the screen, adjustable fonts and themes, and a table of contents.

Your PDF is deleted right after conversion. No sign-up, no email.

  1. Open this page in Safari and choose your PDF on the converter above (it can come from Files, iCloud Drive or a download).
  2. When the conversion is done, tap Download EPUB.
  3. Tap the download (or find it in Files → Downloads), then tap the Share button and choose Books.
  4. The book opens in Apple Books and stays in your library.

On a Mac

  1. Convert the PDF above and click Download EPUB.
  2. Double-click the downloaded EPUB file — it opens in the Books app. You can also drag it into the Books window.
  3. With iCloud Drive turned on for Books, it shows up on your iPhone and iPad too.

Just want to read it now?

Tap Read in browser after converting. The book opens in a clean reading view in Safari, with a table of contents, adjustable text size and a dark mode — nothing to install. The link works for 60 minutes; download the EPUB to keep the book.

What reads well in Apple Books

  • Books, textbooks and reports made from text reflow very well.
  • Scanned PDFs have no text to reflow — keep them as PDF.
  • Visual layouts such as comics, magazines and slides are better left as PDF, ideally on an iPad.

Frequently asked questions

Can Apple Books open PDFs?

Yes, but it shows them as fixed pages. On an iPhone that means zooming and scrolling sideways. An EPUB reflows to the screen and lets you change the font, size and theme, which is much nicer for reading books.

Where is the downloaded EPUB on my iPhone?

Files downloaded in Safari are saved to the Downloads folder in the Files app. Open Files, go to Downloads, tap the EPUB and choose Share → Books if it doesn't open in Books by itself.

Books isn't in my share menu. What do I do?

Scroll to the end of the row of apps in the share sheet and tap More — Books should be listed there. You can also add it to your favorites so it appears first next time.

Will the book sync to my other Apple devices?

If iCloud Drive is turned on for Books (Settings → your name → iCloud), books you add are available on your other iPhone, iPad and Mac signed in with the same Apple Account.
