How to convert a PDF for Kindle

PDFs are hard to read on a Kindle: the page doesn't fit the screen, and the text stays tiny. Convert the PDF to EPUB here first, then send it with Send to Kindle — you'll get a real Kindle book with adjustable text and a table of contents.

Your PDF is deleted right after conversion. No sign-up, no email.

Why convert the PDF first

Send to Kindle accepts PDFs, but it keeps them as fixed pages. On a Kindle screen that usually means small text, zooming in and panning around every page, and no way to change the font size.

An EPUB is different: the text reflows to fit the screen. Once Amazon converts it for your Kindle, you can change the font and size, use the table of contents, look up words and highlight passages — just like a book from the Kindle store. Epubfy also removes the page numbers and running headers that would otherwise land in the middle of sentences.

Step 1: Convert the PDF to EPUB

  1. Choose or drop your PDF on the converter above.
  2. Wait while Epubfy detects the chapters and reflows the text (usually under a minute).
  3. Check the book title — this is the name you'll see in your Kindle library — then click Download EPUB.

Step 2: Send the EPUB to your Kindle

Amazon offers three ways. Use whichever is easiest; they all deliver to the same library.

Option A: Send to Kindle website (any computer)

  1. Go to amazon.com/sendtokindle and sign in with your Amazon account.
  2. Drag the EPUB file onto the page, or click to select it.
  3. Click Send. This is the best option for large files.

Option B: Email (any device)

  1. Find your Kindle's email address: on Amazon, open Manage Your Content and Devices → Preferences → Personal Document Settings. Each Kindle and Kindle app has an address ending in @kindle.com.
  2. On the same page, make sure the email address you'll send from is on the Approved Personal Document E-mail List.
  3. Email the EPUB as an attachment to your Kindle address. The subject and body can be left empty.

Option C: Kindle app on your phone

  1. Download the EPUB on your iPhone or Android phone.
  2. Open the file's share menu and choose Kindle.
  3. Confirm the title and tap Send.

Step 3: Open it on your Kindle

Connect the Kindle to Wi-Fi and sync it. The book appears in your library within a few minutes, and also in the Kindle app on your phone and computer. Your reading position syncs between them.

Tips for a better Kindle book

  • Use text-based PDFs. If you can't select text in the PDF, it's a scan and can't be reflowed.
  • Check the chapters. Tap Read in browser before downloading to see the table of contents. If it looks wrong, switch to basic mode and download again.
  • Keep the PDF for visual pages. Comics, magazines, slides and pages full of equations are better kept as PDF — or read on a larger screen like a Kindle Scribe.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just send the PDF to my Kindle?

You can, and Send to Kindle accepts PDFs. But a PDF keeps its fixed page size, so on a 6- or 7-inch screen the text is tiny and you have to zoom and pan. Converting to EPUB first lets the text reflow, so you can change the font size like in any Kindle book.

Why not convert to MOBI or AZW3?

Amazon stopped accepting MOBI files through Send to Kindle at the end of 2023 and now recommends EPUB. When you send an EPUB, Amazon converts it into its own Kindle format automatically.

Can I copy the EPUB to my Kindle with a USB cable?

Not directly — Kindle e-readers don't open EPUB files that are copied over USB. Use Send to Kindle (email, website or app) instead; the book then also syncs to your other Kindle devices and apps.

My Kindle email was rejected. Why?

Amazon only accepts documents sent from addresses on your Approved Personal Document E-mail List. Add the address you send from in Manage Your Content and Devices → Preferences → Personal Document Settings, then send the file again.

How long does it take to show up?

Usually a few minutes. Make sure the Kindle is connected to Wi-Fi, then sync it from the menu. Larger books can take a little longer.
