What the AI does
The hardest part of turning a PDF into an ebook is knowing what each piece of text is. A PDF only stores positions and fonts: it doesn't know that one line is a chapter title, another a section heading and another a running header. Rules based on font size alone often guess wrong — a large pull quote becomes a chapter, or numbered sections are missed.
So Epubfy asks an AI model to look at the layout the way a person would. It sees a summary of the fonts used in the document and sample lines from a range of pages, and decides things like:
- "Chapter titles are the 20 pt lines starting with Chapter and a number."
- "Sections are the 14 pt bold lines numbered 1.1, 1.2…"
- "The book's title and author are …"
What the AI doesn't do
The AI never writes text into your book. It returns a short structure plan, and the conversion program does the rest:
- Checks the plan against every page of the document. Rules that match nothing, or match ordinary paragraphs, are sent back to the AI to fix, and dropped if they still don't fit.
- Copies the text word for word into paragraphs, rejoining words hyphenated at line ends and leaving out page headers, footers and page numbers.
- Builds the EPUB, with a table of contents from the detected chapters and sections.
This is deliberately different from tools that feed a whole document through a language model to "rewrite" it as an ebook. That approach can quietly change sentences, drop paragraphs or invent text — a serious problem for a book, a contract or study material.
AI or basic mode?
Every conversion uses AI first. If the result's chapters look wrong, switch to basic mode on the result screen: it treats larger text as headings, with no AI involved. Both modes produce the same text; only the chapter structure differs. You can check either one instantly with Read in browser.
What works best
- Books and textbooks with clear chapter and section headings get the biggest benefit.
- Reports, manuals and papers with numbered sections are handled well, including two- and three-column pages.
- Scanned PDFs aren't supported yet, and very visual layouts (comics, magazines, slides) are better kept as PDF.
